   sculptor
   Considered the greatest portrait sculptor of his time, Jean-Antoine Houdon was born in versailles and trained in the studios of Paris. He won the prix de Rome for sculpture in 1761 and studied in italy until 1768, being interested in ancient and Renaissance sculpture. He produced Saint Bruno, which established his reputation and, on returning to Paris, executed a number of elegant statues with mythological or allegorical themes (Diane, 1780, purchased by Catherine II of Russia; L'Hiver, 1783; L'Été, 1785). With great psychological insight, Houdon also began to produce a long line of sculpture portraits of eminent individuals of his age. The first of these was a bust of Diderot, followed by one of Franklin (1778) and Rousseau (1779) and, in 1781, he exhibited his famous seated statue of Voltaire. Producing accurate, expressive, and penetrating portraits, free of ostentation, Houdon sculpted other notable works, including Sophie Arnould (1775), Les Enfants Bron-gniart (1777) and Washington (1785).
